How to Get Into the UCSB Research Mentorship Program (UCSB RMP)

And how to ensure your application essays make you stand out

Are you a high-achieving high school student who’s curious, ambitious, and ready to dive into university-level research this summer? Then UC Santa Barbara's prestigious Research Mentorship Program (UCSB RMP) may be your perfect fit. But getting in is competitive—and your application essay could be the difference between acceptance and rejection. That’s why here we’ll walk you through exactly what the program is, what the admissions team is looking for, how to position yourself, and how our company can help you workshop your essay so you’re presenting your very best self.

What is UCSB RMP?

RMP is an interdisciplinary summer program that brings qualified, high-achieving high-school students from around the world onto the UCSB campus to do hands-on, university-level research, working one-on-one with UCSB faculty. Check out our video below, where My Ivy Education co-founder Krystle DiCristofalo dishes all about the program, and read on to learn more!

Key features:

  • Students are paired with a mentor (graduate student, postdoc, or faculty) and choose a project from across many disciplines, ranging from STEM to the humanities. The ability to study the humanities as well as STEM makes RMP stand out amongst a host of other summer programs for high school students, many of which focus exclusively on STEM.

  • Beyond the project itself, students learn research techniques, hear from UCSB-researchers through a lecture series called “GRIT Talks,” and immerse themselves in university life with ambitious peers.

  • The 2026 program dates are June 15 – July 31.

  • The application window is December 15, 2025-March 9, 2026, but watch out! Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis, meaning the earlier you submit, the better. We're here to help you get your application in ASAP.

Because of the high expectations and the valuable mentor pairing, this is a program where the application essay really counts.

What the Admissions Team Is Looking For

Here’s what the admissions reviewers want to see:

  1. Genuine curiosity and research-mindset: Not just “I want to do research because it looks good,” but “I’m excited to ask questions, dig into methods, and solve real problems.” RMP makes “hands-on, university-level research” the core of its program.

  2. Readiness for university-level work: You’ll be paired with a mentor and expected to engage at a high level. Your essay should demonstrate that you’ve done relevant work (in class, a club, or especially a self-directed project) or are prepared to rise to the challenge.

  3. Interdisciplinary interest: The program covers many disciplines, so showing flexibility, connections across fields, or a non-traditional perspective can help. Due to competition for mentors and subject interests, being open-minded and willing to study outside your first-choice academic subject is a much.

  4. Outstanding achievement: Working towards becoming the kind of student RMP can't say no to starts long before the application deadline. We've helped students work with policymakers to pass bills, start international nonprofits, and collaborate with professors on community impact—all well before hitting the submit button.

  5. Clarity about why UCSB RMP specifically: Reviewers will want to know why this program appeals to you. What about the RMP research environment or the mentor model resonates with your goals?

  6. Strong fit and commitment: Since the program is full-summer and intense, you’ll need to show you understand the commitment, are ready to attend the full span, and can thrive in that environment.

  7. Distinct voice and authentic story: Because many applicants will have strong credentials, your essay must tell a distinct story—something memorable, authentic, personal—not generic talk about “I love science.”
