For many high school students passionate about health, medicine, and science, the UCSF PITCH Program (Program for Investigation and Training in Careers in Health) represents an exciting springboard into the world of health careers.
This immersive, three-week, 100% free summer experience brings rising 10th and 11th graders from socioeconomically-disadvantaged and first-generation backgrounds onto the @University of California, San Francisco campus to explore careers in healthcare, engage in hands-on learning, and connect with mentors and professionals.
With demand growing and a competitive applicant pool, preparing a strong PITCH application isn’t something students should save for the last minute. Let's dive into how to submit the best application you can, and best position yourself not just to study for three weeks, but to potentially change the entire outcome of your education and career as a whole.
What UCSF PITCH Is Looking For
Unlike casual summer camps, UCSF PITCH prioritizes students who demonstrate:
authentic curiosity about health and medicine,
motivation to explore complex concepts beyond the classroom,
teamwork and initiative in research or group work, and
clear academic and career focus.
Because the program is immersive (full-time, Monday–Friday) and culminates in a health research presentation, PITCH selects students who can thrive in structured, rigorous environments and communicate their ideas confidently.
We help students understand this deeper than any checklist can—and then tailor their application accordingly.
Step 1: Clarifying Motivation and Fit
One of the most common challenges we see is students listing broad interests like “I want to help people” or “I like biology.” That’s a good start—but PITCH reviewers want to see purpose.
We work with students to:
✔ Articulate why PITCH specifically fits their goals.
✔ Highlight experiences that show prior engagement in science or healthcare, even if informal.
✔ Connect personal motivations (e.g., volunteer work, family health experiences, club involvement) to their interest in health careers.
A strong “why this program, why now” can often make the difference between acceptance and being waitlisted.
Step 2: Framing Experiences That Don’t Look Like Everyone Else’s
PITCH applicants come from diverse backgrounds, and that's an intentional choice on the part of the admissions committee. For some, that’s science fairs or lab classes. For others, it’s community volunteering, health advocacy, tutoring, or personal projects. For many, access to this kinds of hands-on scientific exposure has never been a possibility. That's okay. PITCH wants to uplift candidates who are otherwise underrepresented in medicine. You just need to show your passion, and share your unique story: what makes you different from every other applicant.
We help students:
Translate these varied experiences into evidence of scientific thinking,
Reflect on what they learned (not just what they did), and
Connect skills like critical thinking, teamwork, and communication to the expectations of the PITCH experience.
That reflection—not just the résumé line itself—makes a stepwise improvement in application strength.
Step 3: Polishing the Narrative
PITCH applications typically include essays or personal statements. Many students struggle here—not because they lack accomplishments, but because they don’t know how to tell their story.
We help with:
Clear, concise explanations of academic and personal motivations
Structures that make essays memorable without exaggeration
Language that conveys passion and professionalism
This storytelling skill isn’t just useful for PITCH—it’s foundational for college essays, interviews, and future research opportunities.
Step 4: Preparing for the Competitive Process
Even with a strong profile, the admissions process can feel opaque. We guide students on:
Timeline planning (application deadlines, prerequisite milestones, interviews)
Document organization (transcripts, essays, recommendation prompts)
How to prepare concise explanations of project work or responsibilities if asked to expand
This organizational support is often what helps applicants feel in control rather than overwhelmed.
What Success Looks Like
Students we’ve worked with who get accepted into PITCH are not always the ones with perfect GPAs—they’re the ones who know how to:
🔹 Demonstrate authentic curiosity about healthcare and science
🔹 Articulate a clear sense of purpose in pursuing health careers
🔹 Connect their backgrounds to future goals meaningfully
That combination—supported by strategic guidance—is what helps them stand out.
Final Thoughts
UCSF PITCH is more than a summer program—it’s a launching point for students exploring health careers and preparing for college-level learning. But because it’s competitive and immersive, thoughtful preparation is essential.
