How to Get Into MIT Beaver Works Summer Institute

The Beaver Works Summer Institute @ MIT (BWSI) is one of those programs that instantly catches a STEM-minded student’s eye—and for good reason. It’s rigorous, hands-on, intellectually serious, and deeply respected. It's a popular pipeline to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as My Ivy Education students and team members have experienced firsthand when getting accepted to MIT after acing the Beaver Works experience. It’s also far more selective than many families realize. Although they don't disclose their acceptance rate, rest assured, it's low, estimated to be around 20% or lower.
Each year, we work with students who are excited about BWSI, but are unsure how to stand out in a pool full of other high-achieving, technically capable applicants. Turns out, liking STEM isn’t enough. Being good at math isn’t enough. Even having coding experience isn’t enough on its own.
So what does make the difference? That’s where strategy comes in.
What BWSI Is Really Looking For
BWSI isn’t just evaluating whether a student can keep up academically. They’re asking deeper questions:
Does this student think like an engineer or scientist, not just perform like one?
Can they apply abstract concepts to real problems?
Will they thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, project-driven environment?
Do they have the discipline and curiosity to complete demanding prerequisite coursework before the summer even begins?
In other words, BWSI is selecting for potential, not polish.
We help students understand that distinction early—and then build an application that reflects it.
Step One: Choosing the Right Track (and Proving Fit)
One of the biggest mistakes we see is students applying to a BWSI course simply because it sounds impressive. Robotics. AI. Quantum. Cybersecurity. All are exciting—but not all are right for every student.
We help students:
Identify which BWSI track actually aligns with their prior experience and interests
Understand the skills and mindset each course implicitly expects
Frame their background in a way that shows authentic readiness, not résumé padding
Fit matters enormously at BWSI. Showing why this specific course makes sense for you is one of the strongest signals an applicant can send.
Step Two: Standing Out in the Prerequisite Phase
The prerequisite courses, a unique feature of BWSI that take place online in the spring prior to the in-person summer courses, are not a box-checking exercise—they’re a screening tool. Strong performance here tells BWSI that a student can handle independence, complexity, and sustained effort.
We guide students on:
How to pace themselves through challenging prerequisite material
How to document and reflect on their learning in ways that strengthen their application
When to go deeper—and when clarity and consistency matter more than showing off
Students who approach prerequisites strategically (instead of passively) are far more likely to advance—and have a valuable experience at BWSI.
Pay attention! We've seen many a student get tripped up by BWSI's slightly confusing timeline. Students register to take the prerequisite courses online during December and January. Then, classes start February 1. After completing the courses, students are then eligible to apply for the complementary in-person summer program, where they tackle STEM challenges alongside their cohort. However, just taking the online classes isn't enough to guarantee acceptance. Student attentiveness, hard work, and completion of these courses are all integral to getting in. Takeaway? Apply early and give it your all.
Step Three: Telling a Compelling STEM Story
BWSI applicants don’t submit traditional essays, but storytelling still matters.
We help students articulate:
How they think about problems
What excites them when something doesn’t work the first time
How they collaborate, iterate, and learn from failure
Why they’re drawn to building, testing, and refining—not just succeeding
This is especially important for students who may not attend a powerhouse STEM high school but have developed serious skills through self-directed projects, competitions, or independent learning.
Why Our Students Succeed
The students we help gain admission to BWSI aren’t necessarily the ones with the longest list of awards. They’re the ones who:
Understand why they’re applying
Can clearly demonstrate readiness and curiosity
Present themselves as future collaborators, not just top performers
Our role is to make sure that who a student truly is—intellectually and creatively—comes through clearly in a highly competitive process.
Final Thoughts
The Beaver Works Summer Institute @ MIT is an extraordinary opportunity, but it rewards preparation, clarity, and intention. With the right guidance, students don’t just apply—they apply well, with expert support. That's where we come in. We're here to help you figure out if BWSI is right for you, navigate that complicated timeline, and maximize your chances of getting in.
If you or your student is excited about BWSI and wants to approach the application strategically, we’re happy to help them put their best foot forward—and build skills that last far beyond one summer, propelling them towards elite college admissions down the line.
