How to Get Into RSI (MIT's Research Science Institute)

Every year, thousands of the world's strongest young scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and programmers in 11th grade apply to the Research Science Institute (RSI), a fully funded summer research program for high school juniors hosted at MIT and sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education. RSI typically admits only around 80-100 students from a pool of roughly 3,000+ applicants, making it one of the most selective academic programs in the world with an acceptance rate that hovers between 1-2%. Yes, really!


Because RSI is free and attracts top students globally, admission is often more competitive than admission to many elite universities, including Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, and MIT itself. So what does it actually take to get in? First, Understand What RSI Is Looking For

With 3,000 applicants across American and international students, a ~4.0 GPA and ~1600 SAT aren't the standout factors they might seem. RSI is really searching for something far more specific:

  • Take the most rigorous STEM courses available - and even look for classes beyond what's offered at their high schools, such as taking college courses online or in-person through dual enrollment

  • Earn top grades in advanced math and science classes

  • Score extremely well on standardized tests. RSI recommends a PSAT Math score of 740+ and Reading/Writing score of 700+, or ACT Math scores of 33+ and Verbal scores of 34+

  • Demonstrate mastery of material far, far beyond their grade level


Many RSI participants have already completed calculus, advanced physics, or college-level coursework before applying. Your academic profile should clearly show that you are operating at a level well above the typical high school student, and that starts years before 11th grade.


Participate in STEM Competitions


One of the strongest ways to demonstrate STEM ability is through competitive achievement.

Many successful RSI applicants have participated in competitions such as Olympiads and STEM fairs, and have gained recognition at the national or even international level. You don't need to win a national championship per se, but strong performance in challenging competitions provides objective evidence that you can excel among highly talented peers.


Pursue Meaningful Research


Research experience can strengthen an RSI application, but students often misunderstand what that means. The goal should not simply be to collect a research title or co-author a paper as the last author named. RSI isn't looking for the student who spent their time running errands for the professional scientists.


Instead, focus on:


  • Asking innovative questions

  • Learning research methodology

  • Contributing meaningfully to a project - ideally one you've spearheaded yourself

  • Developing technical skills

  • Demonstrating intellectual independence

The best RSI applicants can discuss their research deeply and are prepared for RSI's infamous "Hell Week," the end of the program when participants race to finalize their papers and presentations for the research project they've been conducting during the five weeks prior. Sleepless nights and long hours in the lab are common features, so coming to the program prepared with prior experience won't just strengthen your application; it will make your experience there exponentially easier. Admissions reviewers can usually tell the difference between a student who performed substantial work and one who simply joined a lab for résumé purposes!



Develop a Clear Academic Identity


Being good at science, math, or both is necessary for RSI, but nowhere near enough to get you in. Instead, the strongest applicants often have a clear intellectual theme, or narrative, that shows up in every element of their application. For example:


  • A programmer fascinated by machine learning and computational biology

  • A mathematician interested in number theory and cryptography

  • A physicist studying plasma science and fusion energy

  • A biologist investigating gene regulation

Your activities, projects, competitions, and essays should work together to tell a coherent story - and show how RSI can support you in writing the next chapter.


Secure Exceptional Recommendation Letters


Recommendation letters matter tremendously. While RSI requires many essays of variable length, letters of recommendation are where someone who's not you can give their truthful perspective - and that can be incredibly flattering. The strongest recommendations come from teachers or mentors who can describe:


  • Your intellectual ability

  • Your curiosity

  • Your creativity

  • Your work ethic

  • Your potential as a researcher


A detailed letter from a teacher who knows you well is usually far more valuable than a generic letter from a prestigious researcher.
